Asphalt Driveway Cost in Toronto

There is no single price for an asphalt driveway in Toronto. What you pay depends on how large the driveway is, what surface is there now, how badly it has deteriorated, how much excavation and disposal is involved, how water drains off the property, and — most of all — whether the driveway can be resurfaced or has to be fully replaced. This guide explains what those factors do to the price so you can read a contractor quote with confidence.

Average Asphalt Driveway Cost in Toronto

For most Toronto homeowners, driveway paving cost falls into a few recognisable bands. Resurfacing an existing asphalt driveway is the least expensive option. Removing an old asphalt driveway and replacing it costs roughly double. Taking out concrete or interlock and paving over the space costs the most, because the old surface has to be broken up, hauled away and disposed of before any new work begins.

  • Resurfacing existing asphalt$4.00 – $7.00/sq ft
  • Driveway replacement cost (asphalt removed and repaved)$8.00 – $12.00/sq ft
  • Concrete or interlock removed and replaced with asphalt$10.00 – $15.00/sq ft
  • Paving over an existing gravel surface$7.00 – $11.00/sq ft
  • Brand new asphalt driveway with full base preparation$9.00 – $14.00/sq ft

These are estimated ranges before HST, drawn from typical Greater Toronto Area paving costs. They are planning figures, not contractor quotes, and no online tool can replace an onsite inspection.

Asphalt Driveway Cost Per Square Foot

Paving companies price by area, so square footage is the starting point: multiply your driveway length by its width to get it. A 20 ft × 30 ft driveway is 600 square feet.

The reason a per-square-foot rate is a range rather than a fixed number is that a large share of a paving job is fixed cost. Mobilising crews and equipment, hauling materials, traffic control on a busy street and disposal fees are much the same whether the driveway is 350 square feet or 1,400. Spread over a small driveway, those fixed costs push the effective rate up — which is why many contractors also apply a minimum job charge. Larger driveways benefit from the opposite effect and usually see a lower rate per square foot.

DrivewayCheck reflects this directly: smaller driveways receive an upward size adjustment and larger driveways a downward one, on top of the base rate for the work being done.

Resurfacing vs. Full Replacement

Driveway resurfacing places a fresh layer of asphalt over the existing surface. Nothing is excavated and nothing is hauled away, so the driveway resurfacing cost in Toronto is typically around half that of a replacement. It is a good option when the surface is worn or lightly cracked but the driveway still sits flat, drains properly and shows no sign of movement.

Full replacement means the old surface is removed, the gravel base is repaired or rebuilt, grading is corrected and new asphalt is laid. It costs more because of the extra labour, machine time, disposal fees and new base material — but it is the only durable answer when a driveway is sinking, heaving, holding water, full of potholes or breaking apart at the edges.

Resurfacing a driveway with a failing base is the most common way homeowners waste money on paving. The new layer follows the shape of whatever is beneath it, so the same depressions and cracks return within a few seasons. If a contractor recommends replacement where you expected resurfacing, ask them to show you the base condition and drainage evidence behind that call.

What Affects Driveway Pricing?

  • Driveway size

Total square footage sets the material and labour volume, and it also determines how thinly fixed costs are spread.

  • Existing surface

Asphalt, gravel, concrete and interlock each demand different preparation. Hard surfaces are the most expensive to remove.

  • Excavation

How much material has to be dug out, and how deep, drives machine time and haulage.

  • Base condition

A sound gravel base can often be reused. A contaminated, thin or unstable base has to be rebuilt before paving.

  • Drainage

Water has to run away from the house and off the driveway. Correcting slope, adding drains or tying into a catch basin adds cost.

  • Access

Narrow lots, tight laneways, low-hanging wires, overhead branches and street parking restrictions all slow equipment down.

  • Widening

Extra width means new excavation and base in a strip that has never been built for vehicle loads, so it is priced separately from the main area — typically $9–$14 per added square foot.

  • Asphalt thickness

Thicker binder and surface courses cost more but last longer, particularly where heavier vehicles park.

  • Removal and disposal

Tipping fees and truck loads are a real line item, and they are highest for concrete and interlock.

Example Toronto Driveway Projects

The scenarios below are produced by the same calculation the DrivewayCheck estimator uses — no separate pricing model. Each shows the estimated project price before HST, with the total including Ontario’s 13% HST underneath.

  • Single-car driveway, resurfaced

10 ft × 40 ft (400 sq ft) of asphalt in fair shape with minor cracking

    $1,850 – $3,200before HST

    $2,100 – $3,650 including HST

  • Two-car driveway, removed and replaced

20 ft × 30 ft (600 sq ft) of cracked asphalt taken out and repaved

    $4,950 – $7,400before HST

    $5,600 – $8,400 including HST

  • Interlock replaced with asphalt

18 ft × 35 ft (630 sq ft) of pavers removed, disposed of and paved

    $6,500 – $9,750before HST

    $7,350 – $11,000 including HST

  • Gravel driveway paved for the first time

12 ft × 60 ft (720 sq ft) gravel surface graded and paved with asphalt

    $5,050 – $7,900before HST

    $5,700 – $8,950 including HST

  • Replacement with widening

16 ft × 40 ft (640 sq ft) of asphalt replaced and widened by 3–4 ft

    $6,450 – $10,300before HST

    $7,300 – $11,650 including HST

Your own driveway will differ. Two properties with identical square footage can price very differently once drainage, access and base condition are taken into account. For a breakdown of what a paving company’s total price covers, read our Toronto driveway paving cost guide.

How DrivewayCheck Estimates Your Project

DrivewayCheck is an independent consumer pricing tool, not a paving contractor. You enter your address, your driveway length and width, what the surface is made of now, the type of project you have in mind, its current condition and whether you want the driveway widened. The estimator applies GTA paving cost assumptions, adjusts for driveway size and condition, prices any widening separately and shows you a range before and after HST.

You see the estimate immediately — no contact information is required. Requesting quotes from local paving companies afterwards is entirely optional. For a full breakdown of the calculation, see How Estimates Work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an asphalt driveway cost in Toronto?
Most Toronto asphalt driveway projects fall somewhere between resurfacing an existing surface at roughly $4–$7 per square foot and a full removal and replacement at roughly $8–$12 per square foot, before HST. A typical two-car driveway of about 600 square feet therefore often lands in the low thousands for resurfacing and the mid thousands for replacement. These are planning estimates, not contractor quotes.
How much does driveway paving cost per square foot?
Per-square-foot rates in the Greater Toronto Area generally range from about $4 for straightforward resurfacing to about $15 where concrete or interlock has to be removed and disposed of before new asphalt is placed. Smaller driveways usually sit at the higher end of the range because mobilization and minimum job costs are spread over fewer square feet.
Is resurfacing cheaper than replacing a driveway?
Yes. Resurfacing places a new asphalt layer over a sound existing surface, so there is no excavation, removal or disposal. It usually costs roughly half of a full replacement. Resurfacing is only appropriate when the base underneath is still stable — if the driveway is sinking, heaving or badly broken up, a new surface will fail early.
How long does an asphalt driveway last?
A properly built asphalt driveway with a good gravel base commonly lasts around 15 to 25 years in the Toronto climate, while a resurfacing layer typically adds closer to 8 to 15 years. Freeze-thaw cycles, drainage, base quality and sealing all affect how long a driveway holds up.
Do driveway quotes include HST?
Not always. Many paving companies quote a price before tax and add Ontario's 13% HST at invoicing. DrivewayCheck shows both figures — the estimated project price before HST and the estimated total including HST — so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
How accurate is DrivewayCheck?
DrivewayCheck gives an independent planning range based on your driveway size, existing surface, project type, condition and any widening. It cannot see your grading, drainage, soil, base condition, site access or municipal requirements, so a final onsite quotation from a qualified paving contractor may differ. Use the estimate to judge whether the quotes you receive are reasonable.
